Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Being a single girl Scott was also raised through her maternal grandparents. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In addition to working two job opportunities, Scott also studied secondary teaching at Temple University. She hoped to become a high-school English teacher. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of study and being an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. She began her career as a spoken word artist, performing her own work during live poetry readings. She later joined forces together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. In Roots performance she came out to be an artist. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She also gained experience in performing in the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
